Grand County canvassers certify Nov. 5, 2024 election; close race in Commission District 1 decided by 10 votes

The Grand County Board of Canvassers certified the county’s Nov. 5, 2024 general election results at a public meeting on Nov. 18, directing the county clerk to transmit the signed report to the office of the lieutenant governor under Utah state code 28-4-304.
County clerk Gabriel Wojtek summarized the official packet before the vote, saying “the summary results report shows that of 5,872 registered voters … total ballots cast [were] 5,371,” which he recorded as a 91.47% turnout. Wojtek told commissioners 22 provisional ballots were counted (of 34 received), 46 ballots were cured after election day, and 14 ballots were received with a USPS postmark. He flagged that 81 ballots had been returned undeliverable by the Postal Service.
Wojtek also called out a close local race: “Commission District 1 … the total margin ended up being 10 votes.” He explained that the margin was outside the county’s recount threshold (3 votes) and that even if all curable and provisional ballots in that district had been counted, the result would not have triggered a recount.
After a formal motion to certify the results, moved by Commissioner Bill Winfield and seconded by Commissioner Mike McCurdy, the board voted to certify the results and to transmit the certified report to the lieutenant governor. The motion passed unanimously.
The certification text read the list of individuals declared elected under the canvass, including several countywide and local officeholders and noting that write-in candidate Jenna Woodbury received 22 certified write-in votes for Grand County School District 4. The board also recorded the corrected election date language in the certified report (the clerk noted the correct date should be Nov. 5, 2024).
With no public comments offered in person or online during the canvass portion, the chair closed the Board of Canvassers session and the commission proceeded to its scheduled workshops later that day.
