The Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks Commission voted to approve KR115258, a regulation that adds a firearm elk season on Fort Riley lasting the entire month of January and permits unfilled antlerless Fort Riley permits to be used during that period.
At the commission’s Wichita meeting staff told commissioners the change had been workshopped previously in March 2024 and was intended to extend opportunity on Fort Riley. "The changes to this regulation will extend the season on Fort Riley by one month, which is the month of January and will allow any unfilled Fort Riley permits to be used during that time," said Matt Peake, a program staffer presenting the item.
A commissioner moved to approve the regulation and the commission took a roll‑call vote. Commissioners present voted in favor and the regulation was adopted on the floor.
The regulation adds the January season to the Fort Riley structure and confirms that any unfilled antlerless-only permits valid on the fort prior to the change will also be valid during the new January season. Staff indicated this adjustment is administrative to accommodate Fort Riley’s population monitoring and harvest patterns.
The commission did not record any amendments to the motion during the meeting. The change takes the form of a permanent regulation; staff said it had been discussed previously and moved forward for formal action on the date of the meeting.
