Crook County commissioners to send state comments over wildfire risk map classifications

Staff said the public comment period closes tomorrow and that some lots—most notably in Posada Ranch—are classified as "high risk" while neighboring parcels are "moderate," creating confusion for residents because high-risk designation can trigger stricter defensible-space and building-code requirements. Staff recommended submitting written comments and participating in a scheduled county-state meeting later in the month to review the mapping methodology.
Commissioners agreed to draft a concise letter outlining the county’s concerns and to authorize staff to finalize and sign it (out of court) so the county’s input is recorded before the deadline. The board also asked staff to continue outreach with local stakeholders and to brief commissioners in a future meeting with more detailed information.
No regulatory change was enacted at the Aug. 14 meeting; the action was a board direction to prepare submission-ready comments and to join the state discussion.
