City accepts $10,000 health-equity grant to fund cultural-humility training

The Holyoke finance committee on Jan. 14 accepted a $10,000 grant from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to support cultural-humility and equity training for city employees.
Kelly Curran, head of personnel, said the funding will be used for a mix of online and in-person trainings (targeted to police, fire and DPW), book studies and modest engagement activities, and described the training as an ongoing process rather than a single event. "Cultural humility is a philosophy that ensures individuals to effectively engage in interpersonal relationships that are dynamically diverse and mutually respectful," Curran read to the committee, summarizing the training’s six-topic outline.
Councillors asked for a copy of the curriculum and whether department leadership had reviewed the materials; Curran said department heads participated in pilot sessions, provided feedback, and that opt-out provisions exist. The committee voted to accept the grant and requested the curriculum be provided to staff ahead of the full council meeting.
