Laredo ISD to open executive director post for college, career and military readiness

The Laredo Independent School District Board of Trustees voted Oct. 17 to open a full‑time position titled Executive Director for College, Career and Military Readiness (CCMR), Advanced Academics and Schools of Innovation.

Assistant Superintendent Rogelio Garcia described growth in CCMR and career‑technical education: "We generate over $10,000,000 now in CTE," he told trustees while outlining participation, dual‑enrollment outcomes and industry certifications that support workforce readiness. Garcia said the role would oversee expanding programs, relations with business partners and coordination across early college high schools and PTECH programs.

Several trustees expressed concern about process and timing, noting that the item originated from administrative recommendation rather than an earlier board motion; some asked for more data about outcomes and post‑graduation tracking. Supporters, including trustees who reviewed the staffing study, said the combined responsibilities had become too large for a single incumbent and that the district needs focused leadership to sustain academic and workforce gains.

The motion to open the position passed with one recorded vote against. Staff said further steps will include finalizing the job description, posting the vacancy and conducting the selection process in line with district hiring practices.
