Valdez High School relocation near downtown expected to be complete by July 31; district details safety and tech upgrades

District staff provided a detailed update July 18 on the temporary relocation of Valdez High School to a remodeled site. Project coordinator Jose Vasquez and operations and technology staff said the building has been reconfigured for secondary use, plumbing fixtures adjusted to adult heights, partitions and offices installed, and a fence and access control planned to isolate the campus from adjacent elementary facilities.
Staff said they expect construction and punch-list work to be complete by July 31, followed by moving furniture (some relocated from the literacy center) and equipment. The district secured a new address for emergency and communications use: 1700 Chicago Street. The site will add roughly 2830 parking spaces, a security booth and metal-detection capability at the main entrance, and will have access control keypads and digital security cameras; staff also said each classroom would have new projectors, additional data drops and expanded wireless access points.
Trustees asked about transportation; staff reported flexible scheduling and a small number of bus riders on the relocated campus (typically fewer than 10 on a good day). Technology leaders said students in the district already have assigned laptops at their primary schools and the relocated campus includes built-in desktops to support instruction when students lack personal devices.
No vote was required for the informational update. Trustees praised staff for expedited work and said they expect the campus to be ready for students before the first day of classes.
