Kyle Council backs summer internship program for high-school students

Council members presented and approved an internship program aimed at engaging high school students with hands-on experience across city departments. Council Member Zuniga and Daniella Parsley framed the program as a youth-engagement effort steered by student groups including KAYAK; Emma Sanchez, the newly named council liaison from KAYAK, and other youth leaders were present to describe prior projects.
Staff said comparable programs exist in other Texas cities and across the country and that the city would develop selection criteria, training, departmental placements, mentor assignments and a budget proposal before returning to council for a final program vote. Proposed eligibility noted in the presentation: high-school students aged 16–18 who reside in Kyle, with an internship roughly eight weeks in the summer and application materials including resume, cover letter and two letters of recommendation.
A motion to approve agenda item 19 was made by Councilor Zuniga, seconded by Council Member Parsley, and carried on a council vote. Staff was directed to draft a program structure, including a selection process and budget, and return to council for further action.
