Court signs off by consensus on recommended reclassifications; JP pay discussed

During the Aug. 6 session staff presented proposed reclassifications and step increases for several county positions and asked the court to approve the recommendations. Staff described a proposed pay-group change that would move a position from pay group 29 to 30, producing roughly a $3,000 step increase, and noted comparisons with a risk-manager position. When staff asked for objections, the court registered none and the recommendation moved forward by consensus though no formal roll-call vote was recorded.
Commissioners also discussed pay levels for justices of the peace (JPs), noting most county JPs in Nueces County are in the roughly $50,000–$56,000 range while some urban counties report significantly higher JP salaries. Commissioners said they could review elected-official compensation as part of a broader analysis but did not propose immediate changes at the Aug. 6 hearing.
Staff noted one written request (from “Aida”) had not been included in the budget packet and said department-head comparisons would be provided in follow up. The court thanked staff (Dale, Ronnie, Teresa and others) for rapid work producing the budget figures and adjourned the meeting.
