The Kittitas County Board of Commissioners approved docket item 2024-08 to change county code language so that the county automatically adopts the most current state building code when the state updates the code.
Planning staff explained the change would remove the need to bring code updates back to the board every few years; staff noted the 2021 state building code was already in effect and recommended automatic adoption going forward. The Planning Commission had recommended denial of this docket item, but staff described operational efficiencies and the county’s existing obligation to enforce state code.
A motion to approve the staff recommendation carried by voice vote. The change means future state code updates will apply automatically at the county level unless the board later elects to amend county code.
