Gainesville council approves easement release, appointments and backs HUD grant application

The Gainesville City Council on Oct. 1 unanimously approved a series of routine actions, including advisory-board appointments, a quick-claim easement release for a proposed QuikTrip, and sponsorship of a state HUD housing grant application.
City Manager Brian Lackey told the council the easement request, listed in resolution BR 2024-41, relates to "some old, sewer easements associated with the planned new QuikTrip gas station going at the corner of Browns Bridge and McKeever Road." He said the easements "were never used, so we're certainly fine with them being released so they can move forward with the project." The council moved, seconded and approved the release unanimously.
Council also moved to reappoint Lee Rogers and to appoint Cindy Wilson and Will Hudson to the Chattahoochee Golf Course Advisory Committee. The council reappointed Jason Everett and appointed Jonathan Collins to the Gainesville Redevelopment Authority. Motions to approve the appointments were made and seconded and passed by voice vote.
An applicant for a scheduled public hearing asked the council to table that item to Nov. 5 to work with planning staff on outstanding issues; the council approved the continuance by motion.
On a separate item, City Manager Brian Lackey requested that the city sponsor a consolidated state application for HUD housing funds under grant resolution GR 2024-11. He said the jointly filed application would put Gainesville — described as a fourth-year participant in the state program — alongside Statesboro on a single application. If the application is awarded, he said the city and Statesboro would each be eligible to receive $1,000,000. The council approved the sponsorship unanimously.
The mayor also asked the council to accept minutes for recent meetings and opened a brief public-comment period; no members of the public spoke. The city attorney and city clerk had no items, and the meeting was adjourned.
