At its meeting, the Spearfish School District board conducted a first reading of a substantial package of policy revisions spanning the 6000 series.
The superintendent and policy committee walked trustees through key changes: the district will set the school calendar with a longer planning horizon; the special-education policy title was updated to "special education services"; field-trip language is consolidated elsewhere; and academic testing policy was rewritten to emphasize diagnostic and long-term assessment goals. "We like to do it two years in advance," the superintendent said of calendar planning.
A new volunteer policy creates three volunteer categories: routine scheduled volunteers (who must complete a volunteer form and fingerprint background check), nonroutine visitors (requiring an electronic background check) and short-term room parents (who need only Raptor ID screening). The superintendent described the electronic check as an online database search and contrasted it with the more thorough FBI/DCI fingerprint checks.
Other notable changes include adjusted kindergarten class-size thresholds (from no less than 19 to 18), expanded guidance on extracurricular philosophy and enforcement procedures for controlled-substance incidents, a combined diploma/graduation-requirements document, and a building/facility use AR that establishes a $200 security deposit for some users. Trustees were asked to review the proposed language and return suggested edits before the next board meeting.
