FDOT outlines 5-year work program and local projects, schedules public hearing Oct. 21

FDOT planning staff told the Union County commission about the tentative 5-year work program (FY 2027–2031), announced an Oct. 21 public hearing and public-comment window through Nov. 20, and described local resurfacing, sidewalk and safety projects including interim fixes at the SR 100/CR 237 intersection and sidewalk work near the high school.
Amy Robertson of FDOT’s planning and environmental management office and David Tyler, transportation planning manager, presented an overview of the Florida Department of Transportation’s tentative five-year work program and answered commissioners’ questions about local projects.
Robertson said the tentative FY 2027–2031 work program officially closed Sept. 30 and that FDOT will hold a public hearing Oct. 21 from 4:30–6:30 p.m., with a presentation at 6 p.m.; the public comment period runs through Nov. 20 and the package then proceeds to the Legislature and governor for adoption. She also outlined upcoming grant solicitation windows, including Transportation Alternatives (Oct. 22–Jan. 22) and other federally funded opportunities.
Tyler described local projects and timing: resurfacing on State Road 238 from the Columbia County line to State Road 100 is programmed for 2028; a 2.6-mile resurfacing of State Road 16 from State Road 121 toward the Bradford County line is scheduled for 2029; State Road 231 resurfacing near Southwest 73rd Street is programmed for 2028. He said a sidewalk project on SW 4th Avenue/SW 11th Street by the high school is nearing design completion, with drainage walls and lighting included in scope.
On the frequently raised safety issue at State Road 100 and County Road 237, FDOT described an interim “push-button quick fix” that will add westbound left/left-through shared-lane pavement markings, additional signage (northbound stop-ahead signs with distance plaques, county road arrow plaques), and intersection-warning signs to reduce crashes while the corridor is considered for a future turn lane when resurfacing is scheduled.
FDOT staff distributed resource guides to help county staff navigate grant applications and encouraged local officials to meet individually with DOT to discuss off-system projects and partner on funding. Staff said more detailed project materials will be available after the Oct. 21 public hearing.
