Passaic County honors youth leaders; student describes retreat's impact

The Passaic County Board of County Commissioners recognized participants in the county's Youth Leadership Retreat on Nov. 17 and heard testimony about the program's impact.
Jovan Fernandez, who directs the retreat and works at Stockton University, said the program has run five years and this year received 91 applications and selected 16 recipients. Fernandez said the retreat focuses on teamwork, communication, faith and empathy and aims to give young people a chance to speak about feelings and build confidence.
Student Aliyah Crespo of Wayne Valley High School described the retreat as transformative: "Leadership is not about being the loudest in the room. It's about inspiring others and working together to achieve common goals," she told commissioners.
Commissioners and staff praised the program; Parks and Recreation staff and youth-services leaders were acknowledged for the retreat's award-winning status and for mentoring young people. The board took photos with students and invited continued engagement with the program.
