The Santa Rosa City Council voted to adopt by ordinance — with local amendments — the 2025 California Fire Code and the 2025 California Wildland‑Urban Interface (WUI) Code, which staff said will become effective Jan. 1, 2026.
Mike Johnson, assistant fire marshal, explained the codes are the statewide model codes published on a three‑year cycle and that local jurisdictions may add amendments based on local conditions. He noted AB 130 creates a six‑year moratorium on new local amendments that apply to residential units, so existing local amendments may carry forward. Staff said they performed a red‑line review and made non‑substantive edits to one ordinance recital section but that the changes did not affect the council's ability to adopt the ordinances.
Councilmember Krepke moved to adopt the ordinances by reference and to modify Santa Rosa City Code Chapter 18.44 and add Chapter 18.46 for the WUI code; Vice Mayor Alvarez seconded. The council passed the motion with six affirmative votes recorded. The new code provisions will be codified into city code and enforced beginning Jan. 1, 2026.
