Summary
The Seward City Council authorized advertising for bids on a short Phase 3 water-main connection through the rail campus (engineer's estimate $367,753) and for local work on a 10 MVA industrial substation expansion; both actions were approved by council vote.
The Seward City Council on its regular meeting authorized staff to advertise for bids on two infrastructure projects intended to support industrial development in the city's rail campus. City project engineer Mike described a 180-foot Phase 3 segment of a 16-inch water main that will be installed through a larger casing and include four 16-inch gate valves, with an engineer's estimate for engineering, inspection and related fees of $367,753. "This is a 16 inch main," Mike said, adding that it will help maintain pressure and fire flow for businesses and industries in the rail campus.
Council also approved advertising for the local-construction portion of an industrial substation expansion at 2845 Walker Road. City staff said the expansion will add about 10 MVA using the existing substation footprint; the major transformer portion of the project was previously awarded to Hyundai. The advertised contract work will cover foundations, grounding, conduit and installation of low-voltage signaling needed to receive and energize the new transformer. Staff said a virtual bid opening is planned for Jan. 15 and that the city anticipates full substation completion in January, ahead of a dairy project ramp-up scheduled for Feb. 27.
Both items were presented by staff and each motion to authorize advertising was moved and seconded on the council floor and approved by recorded vote. The council discussion emphasized supporting industrial growth at the rail campus and ensuring sufficient electrical and water capacity for incoming businesses.
