The Dothan City Commission recognized Fire Chief Larry Williams at its Dec. 16 meeting, honoring a career that began in May 1988 and culminated with nearly 37 years of service to the city.
Mayor and fellow commissioners read a series of career milestones and awards for Williams, who was promoted through the ranks to fire captain and later to battalion chief before being appointed fire chief in November 2006. The mayor highlighted Williams’ roles in professional associations, noting his election as Alabama State Director for the International Association of Fire Chiefs and later leadership posts in regional chiefs’ associations.
Williams addressed the commission and audience, saying he was “grateful” and praising department staff and senior management. He thanked colleagues, the commission and city manager for their support and acknowledged family members in the audience, including his daughter and wife. “I’m gonna miss each of you,” Williams said, adding the meeting marked his final commission appearance as chief.
Commissioners and staff praised Williams’ leadership, noting awards such as the Southeastern Association of Fire Chiefs Service Award and local recognitions including a Dothan City Schools Liberty Award. One commissioner said Williams helped residents and the department consistently and described him as “willing to do whatever he can to better our city.”
The retirement recognition was a ceremonial highlight in the meeting; no formal personnel action was recorded on the public agenda. Williams’ retirement will take effect as noted in the mayor’s remarks and accompanying recognition materials.
