Harlingen commission approves rezonings, zoning changes, equipment purchases and board appointments

At its regular meeting the Harlingen City Commission approved a package of land-use, procurement and appointment items.
On land use, the commission approved, on first reading, ordinances rezoning properties at 1616 and 1620 North Ed Carey Drive and a 13.58-acre tract south of Wilson Road to General Retail (GR). The commission also approved a zoning-code amendment authorizing model homes, model home sales offices and home-identification signs in single-family (R-1) and planned-development (PD) districts.
On procurement, the commission approved the purchase of one truck for the Planning & Development Department and a replacement vehicle for downtown maintenance. Parks staff received authorization to purchase up to 24 solar-powered trail lights for City Lake Park in the amount of $49,990, with a commissioner’s amendment allowing staff to consider lower-cost alternatives before finalizing the purchase.
The commission approved entering an advanced funding agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation for the Arroyo Colorado Phase 4 project and authorized payment of required direct state costs; staff said this phase will be constructed within the arroyo and does not require property takings. Commissioners also allocated the city’s 98 Cameron County appraisal-district votes to keep Commissioner David Garza on the appraisal district board. The commission appointed Chief Alviad to the Cameron County Emergency Communications District Board and approved a city representative to the South Texas Emergency Care Foundation board.
