The Newberg SD 29J Board unanimously approved a recommendation on Dec. 9 to name the Newberg High School wrestling room inside the Chuck Kaffel Center the "Russo family wrestling room."
Mark Brown presented the committee recommendation, noting the Russo family's involvement with Newberg wrestling since 1968 across three coaches (Tony, Pete and Neil) and describing the program's long history of competitive success and community impact. Brown said the committee considered three naming options per district policy but unanimously recommended a single name to honor the entire Russo family rather than an individual. He also noted the Kaffel family (for whom the center is already named) supported the proposal and Doug Kaffel served on the naming committee.
A board member moved the naming, the motion was seconded, and the board voted unanimously to approve. Brown said the committee hopes to hold a public recognition at a January home wrestling event and will send formal invitations to board members.
