Manny Sandoz, a student delegate, told the board the trip will let delegates present to students in Asago City, experience local culture, ride the bullet train and host visiting exchange students when they return. Students listed participating eighth‑ and seventh‑grade delegates and described fundraising efforts, including elementary school bazaars, Fred Meyer gift‑wrapping and a spring garage sale. Program organizers estimated the total cost is "around $4,200" per student, largely driven by airfare, and asked the community to donate to the Wadayama exchange program at CBMS to help offset participant costs.
Board members asked about student preparation, fundraising and whether funds or fee waivers are available for students with financial need; staff answered that students attend cultural preparation classes, language and etiquette sessions, and that the program is "student driven and student funded," with the district providing guidance on fundraising. After discussion the board moved and unanimously approved the travel request.
The board did not attach additional conditions at the meeting; staff said they will follow up with more detailed program logistics and noted five student delegates will report back to the board after the trip and five will present to the city council on their return.
