William Wade told the Historic Zoning Commission that his mother’s house of 50 years burned last February and that she is effectively homeless. “Her funds run out in April,” Wade said, asking the commission to add the case to the agenda, hold a special meeting, or otherwise expedite review under an extraordinary-circumstances rule.
Wade said he had submitted materials that he believes meet the filing requirements under Metro code 17.40.420 and cited the commission’s rules allowing exceptions for extraordinary cases. He said three neighbors had signed notices in support and asked the commission not to delay the family’s ability to rebuild.
Commission staff said they regretted the family’s circumstances and that they had not been able to complete a public-notice review for the application yet. Staff told Wade they would work with him to make sure the application is complete and scheduled for the next meeting. The chair noted that convening a special meeting would be difficult because of quorum constraints.
The commission did not take formal action on the request during public comment but recorded the family’s concerns and staff’s pledge to help complete the application for the regular agenda. The item will be considered under the usual application process unless staff or the commission determines an expedited review is feasible.
Next procedural step: staff will contact the applicant about any missing materials and confirm the earliest meeting at which a complete application can be placed on the review agenda.
