Board approves zoning changes for new Pine‑campus elementary, citing community input and Spanish language engagement
Summary
Trustees approved enrollment boundary modifications tied to the new elementary school on the Edward L. Pine Middle School campus, adopting the zoning advisory committee’s recommended option after months of community meetings and translated materials for Spanish‑speaking families.
The Washoe County School District board on Dec. 9 approved a set of enrollment boundary changes to accompany construction of a new elementary school on the Edward L. Pine Middle School campus, enacting the changes effective with the 2028–29 school year.
Chief Facilities Management Officer Tammy Zimmerman and Zoning Advisory Committee Chair Tyler Rogers presented the committee’s work, which included three or four rezoning options and multiple community meetings held in English and Spanish. Rogers said the committee engaged PTAs, site administrators and neighborhood meetings and specifically prepared Spanish summaries and translated materials in response to community requests.
The committee recommended Option 4, which moves contiguous portions of Smithridge and parts of Corbett into the new school zone and splits Dodson to send portions to Hidden Valley and Donner Springs depending on the neighborhood. Staff noted transportation considerations for the so‑called “Longley Triangle” and committed to continuing bus service where McCarran or other barriers make walking unsafe.
Trustees praised volunteer engagement and community outreach; Trustee Hall noted the earlier timing of zoning decisions was intended to give families more time to make choice decisions. The motion to adopt the Zoning Advisory Committee recommendation passed 7 to 0.
What happens next: staff will finalize the enacted boundaries and consult further on interim placements related to Corbett’s repurposing in 2027, and will provide families an opportunity to make enrollment choices next spring.
