Conroe ISD board to open applications, appoint replacement for Trustee Tiffany Nelson

The Conroe Independent School District Board of Trustees voted 6–0 on Dec. 16 to open a public application-and-interview process and appoint a replacement for the Position 1 vacancy created by Trustee Tiffany Nelson’s resignation. Trustees said the process is intended to balance transparency, fiscal responsibility and continuity of governance.

Trustees reviewed four options for filling the seat — leaving it vacant, calling a special election, making a direct appointment, or opening an application and interview process to then appoint someone — and discussed timing and cost. One trustee argued that declining to fill the seat would leave the board under capacity for nearly a year and that a special election would be costly and save only a few months of vacancy time. The board concluded an application-and-interview appointment was the most practical option.

The district said a public statement and application information would appear on the board website possibly as early as Dec. 18 at noon. The application window is scheduled to close in early January; trustees will individually review candidates and conduct interviews on Jan. 13. The board recorded the motion to initiate the appointment process and carried it 6–0 by uplift of hands.

Several members of the public had urged an open and publicly advertised process during the meeting’s public‑comment period. Attorney and resident Charles Meyer referenced the Texas Election Code while urging transparency; multiple residents also said they would consider applying.

Next steps: the district will publish the official application and timeline on its website, accept applications during the posted window, and hold interviews on Jan. 13 before selecting a replacement to fill Position 1 for the remainder of the term.
