The Honolulu City Council formally recognized 17-year-old Spencer Allen and Akahi Hudgins for a Nov. 22 rescue in which they located and retrieved a boater swept away from shore.
Chair Waters and other councilmembers said Allen and Hudgins spotted a distressed boater after bystander reports and that Allen maneuvered his jet ski to recover the man and transfer him to a Honolulu Fire Department rescue boat. Council remarks credited Allen’s years of training with the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association’s junior lifeguard program and his father’s instruction.
In a quoted comment reported during the presentation, Allen said the skills his father taught him were critical: “Just like all things my dad taught me, it really worked when it needed to.” The council passed a resolution commending Allen and Hudgins for their actions and wished them well; presenters noted Allen is a Mid-Pacific Institute senior and competes on the U.S. Olympic development pathway in water sports.
The council’s resolution described the rescue as an ‘‘extraordinary life-saving action’’ and commended the young men for bravery and their example of aloha.
