The Pleasanton Library Commission voted Dec. 4 to recommend an updated two-year work plan to the City Council that explicitly adds review of library budget impacts and a standing focus on community engagement and volunteer programs.
Staff explained the proposed additions as an effort to give commissioners clearer opportunities to offer input on revenues and expenses and to highlight the library’s growing volunteer shelver program. "I would propose pulling an additional proposed goal just to really solidify a report on the library budget impacts for commission," the library staff member said during the presentation, describing the intent to bring a report that would allow commissioners to provide timely feedback.
Commissioners generally supported adding a budget item but debated when it should appear in the calendar; several said an earlier placement in the budget timeline would allow the commission to influence decisions about revenues and expenditures rather than only receiving post-hoc information. Commissioners also discussed exploring sponsorships and community fundraising as part of the engagement strategy.
Votes at a glance: - Consent calendar approval: motion moved and seconded; roll-call vote carried with no opposition. Outcome: approved. - Revised work-plan priorities (recommendation to City Council): motion moved and seconded; roll-call vote carried. Outcome: approved and recommended to City Council. - Elections: nominations and votes for next-year chair and vice chair were held (see separate item below).
Staff said the budget presentation will include program-level impacts such as changes in ebook versus print expenditures, Link+ service costs and the effect of recent vendor transitions on ordering timelines. The commission approved forwarding the revised work plan to City Council for action.
