Building project on schedule; pilot composting program reduces cafeteria waste

The Milltown School Committee’s building committee reported Dec. 18 that the new school project is on schedule and on budget, with steel erection continuing and plans to wrap portions of the structure ahead of slab pours. Committee members encouraged residents to view site photos and drone footage available on the project website.
Separately, staff described a cafeteria food-waste diversion pilot run with Ag Innovation (and in partnership with a USDA grant). At Aquidneck, a waste audit recorded roughly 96 pounds of lunch waste before the intervention; after the diversion program the team reported reductions to a few pounds of trash with outputs reallocated to compost (about 27 pounds), liquid diversion (about 23 pounds) and recycling. Staff described a 'share table' for unopened items and student 'trash rangers' who supervise the program; the district said the pilot has been well received and will expand in the spring.
The committee said the furniture-demo trials allow teachers and students to test classroom setups before final procurement and that the district's energy contract is currently outperforming market rates. Officials noted ongoing coordination with the building committee on historical, cultural and memorial components as the project advances.
