Board approves student representative policy after student proposal

The Lyon County School District Board of Trustees unanimously adopted Policy BCBA on Dec. 12 to create a student representative to the board, following a student‑led proposal and public comment from parents and community members.

Students presented an outline for selecting representatives from each high school and a process to elect or appoint student council members to serve as a five‑member student council and then choose a single student rep for the board. Several students and parents spoke in favor during the public comment and policy discussion, and trustees emphasized the plan’s potential to foster civic engagement.

Trustee discussion touched on practical matters such as transportation and participation requirements; district counsel and administration said existing liability and permission forms used for extracurricular activities can be applied to student representatives so participation logistics can be managed without adding district liability.

The board approved the policy on second reading by unanimous vote. Trustees encouraged the students to ensure broad representation across the district’s high schools and to define any age or attendance thresholds the student group might adopt.
