Kent YMCA reports membership and program growth, expanded community services

Kent — At the Dec. 9 workshop the Kent YMCA’s branch director, Jenna Montoya, joined Parks Director Julie Pryscindola to update the Council on YMCA operations and the partnership with Kent Parks.
Montoya said the Kent branch has 3,216 memberships and over 7,500 individual members, with family memberships a majority and about 1,500 adult or senior memberships. She described growth in youth-sport offerings (basketball, soccer, volleyball), expanded aquatics outreach (three community free-swim days and 3,522 recreational swim participants in the year), and social-impact programs that reached more than 900 participants. The Kent YMCA also operates a crisis response team that responds year-round to routed 911 calls and opened a Pantry of Hope food pantry serving at least about 20 families each Friday; Montoya said the YMCA expects to provide $730,000 in financial assistance toward memberships and programming by year’s end, and that the organization can provide up to $1,000,000 through existing contract commitments.
Councilmembers asked about warming- and cooling-station access for people experiencing homelessness, how the public is notified of inclement-weather services, and how the YMCA distributes information about free swim times and scholarship access. Montoya said public hours and outreach information are shared via Kent Parks materials, YMCA web pages and social media, and staff will provide contact information on request.
