Polk County approves on-site lab services for jail to reduce inmate transports

Polk County Commissioners Court voted Dec. 9 to approve an agreement with BCADX Laboratory to provide laboratory services at the county jail, a move officials said will reduce the need to transport inmates to outside facilities for blood draws and improve timeliness and accuracy of testing.
The presiding official told the court the contract will prevent repeated inmate transports to hospitals, streamline services and improve safety and security. “This should save us time, money, safety, security,” the presiding official said during the presentation. Staff and legal counsel reviewed the draft agreement; pricing sheets that had initially been left blank were provided before the meeting and included in the packet.
Court members thanked staff who worked with the sheriff’s office to assemble the contract; Tammy Plattenberg was singled out for her help in coordinating with the sheriff and jail staff. The court approved the contract by voice vote following a motion by Commissioner Robertson and a second by Commissioner Pervez. The transcript does not record individual roll-call tallies; the motion was announced as carried.
County officials said the agreement will reduce transports and the associated time, security demands and costs, and that the contract had been reviewed by legal counsel prior to approval.
