City grant writer reports $2.5 million water infrastructure award and $1.3 million pending in grants update

Megan Nepali, the city’s grant writer, briefed the City Commission on grant activity during the Dec. 1 meeting, saying the city had an “exceptional year” with a high percentage of applications funded and several large awards pending or accepted.
"I'd say about 73% of our applications were funded," Nepali said. She highlighted a roughly $2,500,000 award for a water‑related infrastructure project and said the city has about $1,300,000 in pending grant applications. Nepali noted that awarded amounts sometimes differ from the original requests and that the city’s grant requests are tracked across fiscal years.
Commissioners asked about specific grants, including a federal funding request for a pumper/pumper truck that the city submitted with a township partner; Nepali said the partnership helped the application. She also explained that many state grants are sub‑granted federal funds and that the city tracks departmental matches and committed local funds in grant planning.
Nepali said she circulates a monthly spreadsheet to city staff summarizing active grant activity — applications in progress, awards and denials — and that the city is about halfway through its fiscal year, which affects the rhythm of grant applications and award notifications. Commissioners thanked Nepali and noted the value of grant writing to deliver projects that otherwise would be beyond local budgets.
The commission had no additional action on grants at the meeting; staff and departments will continue to track pending awards and report as funds are awarded or contracts executed.
