Hamilton County honors Major Dan Ems on retirement

The Hamilton County Board of County Commissioners issued a proclamation Dec. 18 recognizing the retirement of Major Dan Ems from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, effective Dec. 12, 2025.
The proclamation recounted Major Ems’s service in the United States Marine Corps, joining at age 17 and serving 12 years, and his career in the sheriff's office beginning in January 1996. It noted promotions to jail services sergeant in 1998, lieutenant in 2008 and jail services major in 2021, during which Major Ems oversaw more than 400 uniformed and support staff and the care, custody and control of more than 1,000 inmates per day. The board cited Major Ems’s involvement with the Hamilton County Addiction Response Coalition and his work on recovery pods and other initiatives linking treatment and reentry supports.
Major Ems thanked colleagues and credited uniformed and civilian staff for supporting his work. "I couldn't have done it without them," he said, acknowledging co-workers and family as he accepted the proclamation. Commissioners praised his leadership and impact and invited Major Ems, colleagues and family to a photo following the presentation.
