Sergeant Kevin Ku of the Hammond County Sheriff's Office told trustees that Crosby Township had 80 dispatch details during January, including six auto accidents, 13 days of traffic detail, 18 vacation checks and 14 school patrols. "They had 3 traffic violations, a total of 7 traffic contacts, 1 speeding, 4 warnings, and 2 others," Ku said.
Ku said the sheriff's criminal investigations section had two cases assigned to detectives that remained open and reported "no assets or stolen property recovered" during the reporting period. When a trustee asked whether the sheriff had firm plans for changes to local coverage, Ku said he had not been told and that "March 21 will be my last day of employment with the sheriff's office." He added he had "no idea" what the department's plans would be following his departure.
Trustees and residents asked whether the traffic-detail sergeant could increase hours if the township agreed to pay for extra coverage. Ku said additional detail assignments were possible and that officers often sought detail work; he also said the hourly cost for a detail would remain the same. Trustees noted contracting additional hours could be expensive and said they would discuss options.
