Commission clears pergola on side yard at 1392 Hanbury Court

The Gahanna Planning Commission on Dec. 3 approved variance V-30-2025 to permit a 190-square-foot pergola to be located on the side of the house at 1392 Hanbury Court instead of strictly behind the principal structure.
Planning staff said all required setbacks are met and recommended approval; the pergola is approximately 8 feet 4 inches at its highest point and would sit over an existing patio. Staff noted a 5-foot privacy fence and a mature front-yard tree that will partially screen the pergola from the right of way.
Homeowner Nicole Coverstone told the commission that the house sits on a cul-de-sac and the rear yard is narrow, sloped and constrained by a 10-foot drainage easement, so the side placement over the patio provides usable, private outdoor seating. "It's a patio," Coverstone said when asked whether the pergola would be attached to existing pavers; she added the pergola is steel and a dark charcoal color designed to be low-maintenance.
Commissioners confirmed the structure has not been built and that the pergola is designed to be affixed to the existing patio. Commissioner Tamarkin moved to approve the application; Commissioner Greenberg seconded, and the motion carried on a roll-call vote.
Next steps: applicant to secure any required building permits after administrative comments are resolved.
