VFW and American Legion donate to Harrison public safety and mayor's fund; library lists holiday programs

Local veterans groups and the Harrison Public Library used the Dec. 2 council meeting to announce donations and upcoming community programs.

A VFW representative told the council the post was donating $1,000 to the Harrison Fire Department, $1,000 to the Harrison Police Department and $1,500 to the mayor's fund. The VFW also asked for nominations for teacher of the year, firefighter of the year and police of the year to forward to the post for recognition.

An American Legion representative (referred to in the meeting as “Jean”) presented a check and reported the Legion contributes $2,500 per month to the mayor's fund and provided an additional $2,500 at the meeting. The Legion representative said the group donated $6,000 to cover two radios needed for two new police officers and reported the Legion’s total community donations for the year are $195,904.

Shana Neck of the Harrison Public Library announced the library’s Santa event on Dec. 13 (11 a.m.–1 p.m.), a Newport Aquarium presentation at 1 p.m., a Dec. 3 ornament-making program and a Hawksworth blood drive on Dec. 22 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; she provided the library contact number and said donors would receive a Hogsworth Hero backpack at the blood drive.

Council members and staff also noted upcoming local events: Willow Park’s rededication at 10 a.m. Saturday with speakers including Mayor Ryan Grubbs and Ohio State Representative Cindy Abrams; the city’s Christmas parade and tree lighting; and a Wreaths Across America event on Dec. 13 supported by combined donations from the Legion and VFW.

The announcements preceded the council’s business session and were part of routine presentations and community reports that closed with department and committee updates.
