Sheriff reports higher crash counts, stable jail population in October

The Washington County sheriff presented the office's October 2025 activity report to the commissioners on Nov. 25, highlighting public-safety trends and staffing changes.
The sheriff reported a decrease in booked inmates from 98 to 94 and an average daily jail population of about 95.8. For Group A offenses the office recorded a roughly 86% clearance rate (14 offenses with 7 arrests); Group B clearances were lower at about 61% (41 offenses). Traffic crashes rose to 55 for the month, the highest of the year so far, and traffic enforcement citations decreased from 175 to 127.
The sheriff said the department currently has six vacancies in the law-enforcement division and three in the jail; four jailers will attend the police academy beginning Jan. 1 as part of a plan to backfill patrol roles through internal promotions and training.
Commissioners asked about mapping crash and crime locations and the sheriff said he has prepared heat-map presentations in previous town-hall meetings and can provide mapping to the court. The report concluded with brief discussion of staffing and training timelines.
