County Council backs BEDC with resolution and asks for clearer communications

The Monroe County Council unanimously approved Resolution 2025‑54 on Dec. 16 pledging support to the Bloomington Economic Development Corporation and indicating intent to appropriate funds for economic development activities.
Clark Griner, interim BEDC president, described recent efforts to attract employers and retain traded‑sector industries, citing local wins such as Semper’s purchase of the former GE site and outreach at the Monroe County Airport. Griner said the BEDC’s work has historically produced a high return on investment for the county: "For every $1 that you invested in the BEDC, there was it led to $289 in capital investment back into all of Monroe County," he said.
Several councilors supported the resolution but asked for clearer, regular communication from the BEDC and a more detailed window on leadership and governance following recent transitions. Councilor Bridal said she would like more updates so council members can better understand BEDC developments before voting on funding. Griner agreed to provide ongoing briefings and said the board is actively discussing leadership succession.
Councilor Henry also asked how the council’s resolution would be conveyed to the Board of Commissioners; staff said resolutions and the council’s claims docket are included in the commissioners’ packet for consideration.
The resolution passed unanimously 6-0; councilors asked BEDC to return with updates and to coordinate with county staff and commissioners on next steps.
