Jackson County approves bids and surplus steps to replace aging solid-waste trucks

Public Works staff reported the unit proposed for surplus is a 2008 F550 crew-cab patching truck with a seized engine and more than 220,000 miles; engine replacement quotes to return it to service ranged into the low–mid $20,000s. Staff recommended bidding on a surplus 2005 Ford F750 Super Duty dump truck (about 117,000 miles) as a replacement; that truck was described as pre-emissions with a Cummins diesel and Allison transmission. Staff and commissioners discussed budget impact: reserves at the start of the year were cited at about $500,000, and staff estimated proceeds from selling the surplus truck could be roughly $67,500.
Commissioners moved and approved a motion to allow bidding on the F750 with a purchase price not to exceed $30,000 and authorized surplus procedures for the older F550. Staff said funds are available in the vehicle replacement budget (Fund 100) to cover the purchase and will report back with contract/bid results.
Key details from the discussion: a public-works representative said the current backup truck had an estimated repair cost of about $23,000 and that the newer replacement truck proposal would reduce ongoing major-repair risk; commissioners pressed staff about whether the purchase would leave sufficient operating capital for the rest of the budget year and staff said it would not leave the department overly lean.
