Buchanan County school board hears construction progress, approves change order under $95,000

A Sansco project representative told the Buchanan County Public Schools board that exterior and interior work on the district's new school is moving forward, with curb and gutter installed at the north roundabout, insulation and metal panels underway on the auditorium, and drywall advancing in Areas C and D.

The presenter said roofing was installed on Area B, mechanical/plumbing/electrical rough-ins continue across the building, and rooftop HVAC units had been set in place. "This unit's about 40 feet long. I think it weighed 10 ton," the presenter said when describing an HVAC unit placed on the roof. The representative reported the bus parking lot is about 98% complete, paving and remaining roofing work have been delayed by weather, and temporary heating is being phased in for occupied portions of the building.

After the update, the board considered a request from administration to approve change order No. 11 to the builder's package, described in the meeting as "just under $95,000." A motion to approve the change order was made and seconded; the board conducted a roll-call vote and approved the change order.

The board did not provide a detailed line-item breakdown of the change order during the public portion of the meeting. The administration presented the request as a contractual modification tied to ongoing construction needs and sought board authorization to execute the work.

Next steps the presenter identified include finishing exterior metal paneling, completing asphalt paving as weather allows, continuing drywall and low-voltage cabling installation, and progressing work on the football-field foundations and bleachers.

The meeting moved on to routine business after the vote.
