BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. — Commissioners heard a first-reading proposal to impose a four‑month moratorium on the permitting, approval and construction of large-scale data or crypto mining centers in Sullivan County.
Sponsor Commissioner Mains said the measure is intended as a "protective pause" rather than a ban and will allow staff and experts time to evaluate impacts on electrical infrastructure, water use for cooling, noise, roads and property values. "This pause allows us to protect our infrastructure, our rural communities, our farms, and our quality of life while we gather facts and establish proper safeguards," Mains said.
The resolution directs the Planning and Codes Department to provide recommended zoning text amendments and any regulatory changes for commission review. Commissioners placed the item on first reading to allow responsible review and input from utilities and stakeholders.
