Tompkins County honors Mike Lane for 44 years of public service

New York State Assemblymember Anna Kellis presented a formal proclamation recognizing Lane’s service dating back to his first local office in 1979 and his long tenure on the Tompkins County Legislature. Kellis read the proclamation noting his roles as Dryden trustee and mayor, service on the county legislature since 1993, leadership on capital planning and infrastructure projects, and his reputation for civil engagement and mentorship.
Former colleagues and community members offered tributes during public comment. Jim Dennis described Lane as “the most honest guy ever” and praised his fiscal stewardship; Leslyn McBean Claiborne and others recalled Lane’s mentorship and steady presence over decades. The legislature also approved a subsequent appointment naming Michael E. Lane to the Tompkins County Historical Commission through Dec. 31, 2028.
The recognition and appointment were accompanied by presentation of awards to outgoing legislators and a brief ceremony marking the change in membership.
