During the public-comment period at the Dec. 10 Jasper County Airport Commission meeting, a resident questioned county spending tied to airport improvements and operations.
The commenter said the county had rented a trailer for about $60,000 per year (four years equaling roughly $240,000), added furniture costs and later purchased the trailer. He questioned whether the county should have invested in a small permanent terminal structure instead of renting and purchasing a trailer and also questioned the expense of clearing a couple of acres of land.
Commissioner Fulgin responded that there is a county-council resolution on the Dec. 15 agenda to purchase the temporary terminal building for $151,500, paid from bond proceeds issued to cover the county's match for the airport project. Fulgin said the bond proceeds total roughly $400,000 and that the temporary-terminal purchase would leave approximately $248,000 in that fund.
The public commenter said hangar owners had been invited to build on airport property with long-term leases and worried recent changes make leaseholders feel like "squatters," urging that taxpayers should not bear undue burdens. The commission thanked the public for comments and noted the county-council workshop will include a detailed capital-improvement presentation.
What happens next: The county-council agenda will include the temporary-terminal purchase on Dec. 15; the commission will continue to provide input at its workshop and through staff reports.
