Chelsea School Committee elects Anna Hernandez as chair and adopts committee rules for 2026

Anna Hernandez was elected chair of the Chelsea School Committee during the committee’s organizational portion of the meeting and was sworn into office.
Hernandez, in remarks after her oath, emphasized equity, partnership with city government, fiscal responsibility, and supporting students and families. She described Chelsea as a "gateway city" that must act with urgency to preserve affordability, improve long-term planning and zoning, and ensure schools serve as a central social safety net.
The committee elected Kathy Cabral as vice chair and selected delegates to represent the committee at the city council and at the Shore Collaborative: Clari Cova Caraballo as the delegate to the city council and Myra (Mayra) Balderas as the Shore Collaborative delegate. Each delegate took the oath of office following their selection.
Under suspension of the rules, the school committee moved to adopt the school committee rules of 2020 for 2026 until the committee votes to amend them. That motion was made and seconded during the meeting.
Chair Hernandez thanked educators, families and district leadership and called for close partnership with the city manager and council to pursue equity and safe school facilities. The committee will continue work on budgets, student services, and long-term investments aligned with those priorities.
