Marion County Commission reviews records request, weed-control operations and holds 15-minute executive session

At its Jan. 10 meeting the Marion County Commission approved minutes, discussed a planning & zoning records request and appointment notification procedures, reviewed weed-control and transfer-station issues, and entered a 15-minute executive session under KSA 75-4319(b) on employee performance, returning with no decisions.
The Marion County Commission convened for its regular meeting and approved Dec. 31 minutes before moving through administrative reports and several department updates.
At Commissioner Dirks' request, staff member Sharon provided an update on a broad records request from Improvement District No. 2 (sent Dec. 6). Sharon said the county provided parcel-specific records where possible and asked the requester to narrow the scope or come review parcel files; she said she had not heard back from the district. Commissioners asked for clearer communication on intergovernmental record requests in future.
Commissioners also discussed the process for notifying newly appointed members to the planning and zoning board; staff said she will email the board and the nominee, add the appointee to the mail list and prepare an onboarding packet, and commissioners requested a more formal written notification process.
Roads, transfer-station and environmental services topics occupied the middle portion of the agenda. County staff described noxious weeds present in Marion County (bindweed, musk thistle, johnsongrass and sericea lespedeza) and said the state may add additional species to the noxious-weed list. Commissioners raised large-area concerns such as phragmites in wetlands and discussed options for aquatic-chemicals monitoring. On transfer-station operations, commissioners and staff discussed a magnet purchased by Road & Bridge to reduce flat tires from debris; staff agreed to test using the magnet weekly and report whether it reduces incidents.
The commission voted to go into a closed 15-minute executive session to discuss the job performance of specific employees under KSA 75-4319(b). The motion was seconded and approved; when the board returned to open session the chair stated that no decisions had been made in executive session.
Before adjourning, commissioners reviewed a handout from the Kansas Natural Resource Coalition and discussed brush-clearing and treatment protocols along county right-of-way. The board also agreed to review public-comment policy related to "payday" meetings and how public comment is scheduled for alternate meeting formats. The meeting was adjourned following a motion and voice vote.
