Albert Lea superintendent previews 'TIGERS' strategic framing, posts task-force materials online

Superintendent Dr. Heil updated the Albert Lea Area Schools board on the district task force and a draft strategic framing he described as 'TIGERS' — Teaching, Innovation, Grit, Empowerment, Readiness and Systems — at the board's November meeting.

Dr. Heil said the first task-force night drew about 34–35 participants, that outside consultants shared data and financial context, and that the district will post the meeting recording and resource materials to a new task-force landing page so the public can review them. "Because, again, we want it to be transparent," he said.

He outlined how the TIGERS language maps to district priorities: teaching emphasizes literacy and instructional excellence; innovation focuses on preparing students for future learning and careers; grit concentrates on perseverance and growth mindset; empowerment highlights shared leadership; readiness addresses college-and-career skills across grade levels; and systems reflect reliable operational supports. Dr. Heil said district staff will solicit student and staff feedback and bring refined wording back to the board in coming weeks.

Board members suggested study sessions to explore individual TIGERS elements in depth and asked staff to test the language with students and school leaders before broader rollout. Dr. Heil said the district will upload PowerPoint slides, videos from presenters, and committee materials when the recordings are finalized.

Next steps include continued committee meetings, posting materials to the district landing page, and a planned rollout timeline once staff and student feedback are incorporated.
