Sheriff’s office reports staffing changes, new radios, and vehicle issues

LaSalle County’s sheriff updated the public safety committee on staffing, equipment and operational changes on Jan. 6.
The sheriff (Speaker 7) said four employees left to attend the academy and the office promoted personnel to corporal and sergeant to replace retirees. He told the board that pallets of Motorola radio equipment have been delivered and the department is awaiting install dates from the vendor.
"All of our radio equipment is in for our Motorola radio purchases for our cars and our deputies," the sheriff said, adding installers will use the maintenance bay and expect to complete work rapidly once start dates are set.
Committee members asked whether the outfitter handles installation and whether other departments use the same vendor; the sheriff said the county’s merit commission sets hiring and testing dates and that the commission’s members are selected as part of department administration.
The coroner (Speaker 3) reported ongoing issues with a new county van that would not start on repeated occasions. He said a new battery (county cost $187 so far) was installed and he is seeking reimbursement from the dealer; other repairs have been covered under warranty. The coroner said final outfitting remains to be completed by the upfitter and the vehicle should be back in service within one to two weeks.
The coroner also said his office posted an application to fill a deputy vacancy after a deputy died in October, and that one of the forensic sample freezers needs commercial repair; maintenance staff provided contact information for a commercial contractor.
The committee approved routine bill payments and moved on to other agenda items after the reports.
The sheriff said contract negotiations on salary and labor are underway and that the merit commission recently established a new hiring eligibility list; no formal board action was requested on those items at the Jan. 6 meeting.
