Council approves state grants for fire peer support and 911 dispatch

The Logan City Council on Jan. 6 approved Resolution 25-49 to accept and appropriate two state grants: $5,000 for the fire department’s peer support program and $60,123 for 911 dispatch.
Staff finance director Rich Anderson told the council the 911 allocation “can only be used for dispatch,” and that the money would likely fund training and one-time equipment purchases. “This doesn’t affect us at all,” Anderson said, explaining the city’s practice of not budgeting grants until they are received and that the grant would be additional to base operations.
Anderson said the reduced level of state allocation compared with prior years will not require immediate operational changes but will influence future planning for long-term needs, including a potential new 911 facility. The council opened the matter for public comment during a public hearing; resident Gail Hansen asked whether the city’s emergency response includes proactive support for domestic-violence incidents and cross-training with local providers.
Council members moved and seconded the resolution after public comment. The chair called for the ayes and announced the motion passed.
The resolution directs staff to accept the grants and apply the funds consistent with their restrictions; the 911 funds must be used only for dispatch-related expenses. The council did not specify additional allocations beyond training and equipment in the meeting. The city will report further budget details in follow-up materials and future budget documents.
