Commission hears updates on safety element, historic nomination and code work

At the same meeting staff briefed the Planning Commission on several policy and program items slated for future review.
An unidentified planning staff member reported that the city’s safety element draft is nearly complete and the department is coordinating with the Southern Marin Fire District on evacuation and other policies. Staff said the safety element will likely return to the Planning Commission for review in October or November and then proceed to the City Council for final action per state general plan rules.
The same staff report said the city hall and fire station have been nominated to the National Register; the nomination was filed with the California Office of Historic Preservation and is scheduled for state Historic Resources Commission consideration on Nov. 7. If designated at the state level, the nomination could support national listing later in the process.
Staff also previewed inclusionary housing options being considered for a September 15 City Council study session and noted ongoing work on parking and commercial code updates; a commercial code study session with two commissioners and city council members is planned as a prelude to formal council review and ordinance drafting.
Commissioners also called attention to Mill Valley’s 125th anniversary events (Labor Day) and an Old Mill Park ribbon cutting scheduled for Aug. 30.
