County Council affirms support for Kamehameha Schools admissions policy

Marissa Harmon, speaking for Kamehameha Schools, said the resolution reaffirms ‘‘Keali‘i Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s kauoha’’ and described the schools’ commitment to Hawaiian culture‑based education across its campuses and community programs. Multiple councilmembers, including those who are Kamehameha graduates or who have worked with school alumni, expressed support and highlighted the institution’s longstanding educational and community investments.
Council discussion referenced recent legal challenges and public debate over admissions policies; several members said the resolution intends to show county solidarity with the schools’ mission and to support efforts that prioritize Native Hawaiian education and cultural stewardship.
The resolution passed on a voice vote; no amendments were proposed. Councilmembers noted the schools’ community partnerships and encouraged continued dialogue with local education and community organizations.
