MPO board appoints interim director Mr. Gurum as permanent executive director at $95,035

The Charlotte County Punta Gorda Metropolitan Planning Organization voted unanimously March 31 to appoint interim MPO director Mr. Gurum as the agency’s permanent executive director and approved a 10% salary increase to $95,035.

MPO staff attorney Miss Knowlton told the board the agency had received three applications since the previous meeting but that none met the minimum qualifications, so none were forwarded to the board for consideration. That prompted discussion among commissioners about whether to promote the interim director, citing continuity and the difficulty of recruiting for the role.

Several commissioners urged stability in the MPO office and noted staffing challenges. One commissioner referenced County salary-comparison data and proposed an amendment to the raise based on comparables; the proposal was discussed and later withdrawn. Commission discussion included whether the director appointment would carry additional entitlements beyond salary such as mileage or vehicle access; staff said standard benefits and mileage apply per county HR policies.

Mr. Gurum told the board he was prepared to continue leading the MPO, that his family supports the decision, and that he intends to stabilize operations and recruit additional staff. After a motion to appoint him to executive director at the stated salary, the chair asked for opposition; with none voiced, the motion passed unanimously.

The board did not schedule a separate interview process, noting the position remains advertised while the appointment establishes a permanent director who can carry out the office’s work.

The board moved next to TIP amendments and LRTP matters; Mr. Gurum will assume the director duties as the MPO proceeds with the long-range plan and TIP updates.
