Guadalupe County adopted the 2024 International Fire Code and an updated fire‑code fee schedule at its Dec. 16 meeting.
County staff explained the 2024 code is similar in most respects to the current code but includes changes that affect large‑scale buildings—such as sprinkler requirements for certain high‑rise structures—and that the county retained many local amendments. Adopting the 2024 code aligns Guadalupe County with neighboring jurisdictions that have already moved to the updated code.
The court also approved a revised fee schedule for fire permits and specialty systems to account for increased workload, inspections (including hydrant flow testing) and technical plan reviews. Staff said fee changes will help support full‑time inspection staff and necessary equipment.
Officials said the code would take effect Feb. 1 to allow contractors and property owners time to finish in‑progress projects. Staff noted the county fire‑code authority retains discretion to allow phased implementation or variances when strict compliance would impose undue hardship on small businesses.
Next steps: Staff will publish implementation guidance and update permitting processes; the county will notify affected jurisdictions and contractors about the Feb. 1 effective date.
