Transportation Authority releases $237,000 in Prop K funds for Ocean Avenue multiuse path feasibility study

The San Francisco County Transportation Authority on Dec. 9 approved amending a Prop K standard grant agreement to release $237,000 in reserve funds and appropriate the amount for an Ocean Avenue Multiuse Path Feasibility Study.
Jana Waldman, Capital Projects, said the study originates from the Ocean Avenue Mobility Action Plan (March 2023) and will evaluate the condition of a retaining wall that creates a bottleneck, the possible removal or replacement of an adjacent pedestrian overcrossing, right‑of‑way transfer issues, and rough order‑of‑magnitude costs. The study will assess a 15‑foot widened path to allow continuous bike use between the Balboa Park BART station and the City College entrance.
Commissioners asked staff to consider the project in light of City College construction and planned housing nearby; staff said City College has been part of the coordination and that the study will include traffic analysis and right‑of‑way evaluation. Deputy Director Carl Holmes said the study is intended to determine whether removal of the pedestrian bridge is necessary and noted right‑of‑way complexities in the corridor.
The board moved to approve the amendment (moved by Commissioner Chen; seconded by Commissioner Mahmood) and the chair recorded the motion as passing. Staff said they will provide a mid‑year update to the CAC (likely in spring/early summer) and a final report to the board in the fall.
